Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden Live, February 2011: a concert marking the Liszt bicentenary A Faust programme of Liszt and Wagner Christian Thielemann conducts the Staatskapelle Dresden - the orchestra whose Principal Conductor he was to become from the 2012 season - in Liszt's Faust Symphony and Wagner's Faust Overture, captured on video in concert. Recorded almost exactly a year after their Missa Solemnis, these performances come from the concerts marking the 200th anniversary of Liszt's birth, given at the Semperoper on 21 and 22 February 2011. Wagner's overture and Liszt's symphony share a common source in Goethe's Faust. Wagner abandoned his original plan to make the Faust Overture a symphony, and the piece slipped into obscurity soon after its premiere; it was Liszt who brought it back to life. Liszt's Faust Symphony, for its part, grew out of his reading of Goethe at the urging of Berlioz, and took shape during the years when he and Wagner were exchanging mutual influences. Wagner conducted the premiere of the Faust Overture during his time as Kapellmeister to the Saxon court, while Liszt would in due course conduct the premiere of his Dante Symphony at the Royal Saxon Court Theatre. The anniversary programme was designed to bring these close connections into focus. Thielemann, at the centre of it all, is celebrated for the Ring, Tristan and Parsifal, and is today the pre-eminent Wagner conductor of his generation - no account of Bayreuth or Vienna can be written without him. Before the concerts he is said to have confessed that "I cannot help being astonished that Liszt is played so rarely"; afterwards the press responded with the highest praise, Die Welt running a substantial review headed "A new light shed on Franz Liszt in Dresden". From 2013 Thielemann took up the post of Artistic Director of the Salzburg Easter Festival, where he has committed to appearing at the head of the Staatskapelle Dresden.
