The Finnish Visionaries Behind the Uncharted Musical Work “UNIKO” Video of the World Premiere Featuring Kimmo Pohjonen, Samuli Kosminen, and the Kronos Quartet This video features the world premiere of “UNIKO,” a piece composed over the course of a year and a half by Finland’s leading accordionist Kimmo Poyonen and virtuoso percussionist Samuli Kosminen, at the Helsinki Festival. Kimmo Poyonen visited Japan in 2004 as part of “Cluster,” a group he formed with members of King Crimson, and overwhelmed Japanese fans with his intense performance. “UNIKO” is electronic music that evokes a distinctly “progressive rock” feel—created using accordion, percussion, a string quartet, and vocals, which were then sampled and programmed—and suggests even greater diversity and potential. This genre-defying work is a product of the Kronos Quartet’s keen sensibility and exciting musical world, combined with the unique talent of Kimmo Pohjonen and the aggressive Samuli Kosminen, both of whom are brimming with a spirit of exploration for new music. The unique sense of tension and looming dread, along with the stimulation and indescribable sense of refreshment you feel after listening, are truly addictive. The stage production makes full use of special lighting and visuals, offering an ambitious experience that stimulates the audience’s senses.
