The program featured Bruckner’s “Te Deum,” conducted by Daniel Barenboim, Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 4,” and Boulez’s “Notation.” For Barenboim himself, 2010 was also a memorable year marking the 60th anniversary of his performing career. At the festival’s official opening ceremony, Barenboim delivered a speech characteristic of his commitment to performing for peace, noting that the hope for peace—which Max Reinhardt and others had envisioned when the festival was founded in 1918—had still not been realized even after more than 90 years. Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, with Barenboim conducting while performing. In an exquisite collaboration with the Vienna Philharmonic, he presented this work—which he has mastered completely—with a grand sense of scale and rich expression. Boulez’s “Notation” was performed in the order I–III–IV–VII–II. This is an arrangement of the work originally composed as “12 Notations for Piano.” While the piece is characterized by overwhelming intensity and a surging, powerful sound, the Vienna Philharmonic, as expected, They bring it all together with a beautiful, uncluttered sound. Next is Bruckner’s “Te Deum,” one of the finest masterpieces among his choral and sacred works.
