2010 Proms: Gergiev & WOP Perform Mahler’s Symphonies Nos. 4 & 5 The “Proms” is Britain’s largest music festival. Top-tier artists from around the world gather primarily at London’s Royal Albert Hall for a series of concerts spanning approximately two months. This DVD features footage from Gergiev’s appearance on August 5, 2010. The program consisted of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 (55’87) and Symphony No. 5 (67’60)—a weighty and substantial program. Gergiev has previously released recordings of these Symphonies No. 4 and No. 5 as part of his Mahler series with the London Symphony Orchestra, and his ambitious and stimulating interpretations have already been proven. Here, he presents a moving performance in the glamorous atmosphere of the Royal Albert Hall with the World Orchestra for Peace, a group of skilled musicians gathered from around the world. The Fourth is one of the most accessible of Mahler’s symphonies and features truly beautiful music. Gergiev delivers a meticulous and delicate performance with great care. The soprano solo in the fourth movement features Swedish singer Camilla Tilling, who sings heavenly music with a beautiful, crystalline voice. In Symphony No. 5, I was truly impressed by the high quality of the brass section, starting with the opening trumpet fanfare. The strings built a three-dimensional ensemble, creating an incredibly beautiful sound. The orchestra members responded to Gergiev’s baton, resulting in a moving concert filled with vivid expression. The World Orchestra for Peace (WOP), performing here, was founded in 1995 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the United Nations, led by the world-renowned conductor Georg Solti.
