The Bregenz Festival is in Full Swing! Vic’s Thrilling Production of “Aida”! While there are countless video productions of Verdi’s “Aida,” this is an extraordinary staging! It’s “Aida” at the Bregenz Festival, known for its lakeside performances. The director is Graham Vick, who is also well-known in Japan. The production makes extensive use of techniques that would be absolutely impossible in a conventional theater, such as incorporating massive fragments of a blue Statue of Liberty and utilizing the lake’s water. By employing cranes to take advantage of the elevation differences, the staging is truly spectacular. Moreover, Vick didn’t simply create a flashy spectacle; he clearly brings to light the social issues Verdi imbued in “Aida.” Aida is sung by Serjan, a Verdi soprano whose popularity has skyrocketed in recent years and who has earned high praise, particularly for her portrayal of Lady Macbeth. Radames is played by Perizzari, who received rave reviews for his performance as José in *Carmen* during the Lausanne Opera’s 2008 tour of Japan. Amneris is played by the veteran Tamar. Patterson, who sings Amonasro, is a young bass prodigy who portrayed Fafner in *Das Rheingold* at the Salzburg Easter Festival under the baton of Rattle. Conducting is the renowned maestro Rizzi, who has served twice as music director of the Welsh National Opera. This production promises to be a rich experience not only visually but also musically.
