Meanwhile, the production features a relatively young cast. Aleksandrs Antonenko, who sings the title role, was born on June 26, 1975, in Riga, the capital of Latvia. Although he is still only 33 years old, he made his Met debut in 2009 as the leading man opposite Renée Fleming. His rich, dark voice possesses the tragic power essential for singing Othello and suggests he is a singer of great promise. Since Domingo was 34 when he first sang Othello, this may well be the first glimpse of how he will continue to develop this role in the years to come. Marina Poplavskaya is a Russian soprano born in Moscow. After winning numerous competitions, she made her debut at the Bolshoi Theatre in 2003. Around 2005, she began to make a name for herself in the West. In contrast to the two young performers, the role of Iago is played by Carlos Álvarez, a renowned Spanish baritone well-known in Japan, who lends a sense of gravitas to the production. The cast is otherwise well-rounded, featuring Barbara Di Castri—a mezzo-soprano known to connoisseurs as a masterful supporting performer—and American tenor Stephen Costello, who is popular with female audiences not only for his singing but also for his striking good looks. Stephen Langridge’s direction creates a striking, somber atmosphere throughout the production, made possible by the extensive use of black.
