Description:

Nelsons and the Vienna Philharmonic Perform Symphony No. 3 Live from the 2021 Salzburg Festival Andris Nelsons and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra have been developing a comprehensive Mahler cycle since their performance of Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” at the 2018 Salzburg Festival. Since then, Symphony No. 6 was performed in 2020, No. 3 in 2021, No. 5 in 2022, No. 4 in 2023, No. 9 in 2024, and No. 10 “Adagio” in 2025, all at the Salzburg Festival, while Symphony No. 7 was performed at the Vienna Musikverein in 2023. With the Salzburg Festival as their central hub, Nelsons and the Vienna Philharmonic have systematically presented Mahler’s works at a pace of nearly one symphony per year, building a major project encompassing both live performances and video recordings. The remaining performances in the project include Symphony No. 1, “Titan,” performed at the Musikverein in February 2026, followed by Symphony No. 3 at the Musikverein and Symphony No. 8, “Symphony of a Thousand,” at the Vienna Konzerthaus in May of the same year. Given this schedule, it is fair to say that this Mahler cycle is nearing completion as a comprehensive video collection. This release features a concert recording of Symphony No. 3, filmed at the 2021 Salzburg Festival. Among the symphonies of the Romantic era, Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 stands out for its particularly vast and grand conception. A monumental work spanning six movements and lasting approximately 100 minutes, it is a magnificent realization of the composer’s philosophy, which sought to depict through music a comprehensive vision of the world—from nature and life to humanity and ultimately love. In this performance, Nelsons portrays the vast flow from the first movement—filled with chaotic, primal energy—to the serene and sublime affirmation of the final movement with meticulous structural precision and a sense of expansive breathing. The music maintains a high level of tension throughout, guiding the listener toward the conclusion as if they were listening to a grand epic. The soloist is Violetta Urmana, renowned for her profound expressiveness, who quietly illuminates the symbolic world of introspection in the fourth movement, “Song of the Night.” Furthermore, the addition of the Bavarian Radio Choir and the Salzburg Festival & Theater Children’s Choir creates a vivid contrast in the fifth movement with their innocent, celestial sound. The Vienna Philharmonic’s uniquely rich and supple tone, combined with Nelsons’ clear and emotionally charged interpretation, results in a performance of Symphony No. 3 that captivates the listener with its transparency and profound spirituality.
