Gounod's Faust was based on Part 1 of Goethe's Faust and premiered at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris in 1859. Initial reception was modest, though Berlioz is said to have held it in high regard. Its popularity grew with each subsequent performance, and it is now widely cherished as a masterpiece representing French opera. Alex Olié's production boldly reinterprets Goethe's eternal themes of "knowledge," "desire," and "redemption" through the lens of artificial intelligence and human emotion, set in a futuristic laboratory. World-renowned singers such as Piotr Beczała, Marina Rebeka, and Luca Pizarroni powerfully drive this tense drama.
