This is the release of Brahms' "German Requiem" by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Thielemann at the Salzburg Festival in 2023. Thielemann specializes in works with voices, and his characteristic heavy and rich music making with a sense of German tradition fits perfectly with the sound of the work, resulting in a performance that leaves an overwhelming impression. The German Requiem, Brahms's masterpiece, depicts the "prayer" of mankind that transcends the framework of religion and is shared with Bach's Mass in B minor and Beethoven's Missa solemnis.It is said that Brahms was motivated to compose the Requiem by the death of his benefactor Robert Schumann. A few years later, he experienced the death of his beloved mother, and the composition progressed rapidly, with a partial premiere followed by the complete work's premiere on February 18, 1869. Normally, the Requiem, a mass for the dead, is in Latin, as it is the liturgical text of the Mass in the Catholic Church. However, Brahms, who was a Protestant Lutheran, used selected words from the German version of the Lutheran Bible as the lyrics. Therefore, "Deutsches Requiem" is not liturgical music, but it is an expression of Brahms' deep faith as a devout Protestant. The two soloists for this performance are Elsa Dreisig, who performed Fiordiligi in "Cosi fan d'utte" at the Salzburg Festival in 2020, and Michael Foret, who has a strong presence and powerful singing voice. It is also noteworthy that the Vienna Musikverein Choir, which performed the first three movements in December 1867, two years before the premiere, will be performing the work. (King International)
