[Synopsis: June 1800. Napoleon's army gains momentum in Europe, the Roman Republic is abolished, and the Papal State is restored. The painter Cavaradossi helps an escaped political prisoner, Angelotti, escape from prison. When it is revealed, Cavaradossi is captured by Superintendent Scarpi and sentenced to death. Cavaradossi's lover Tosca pleads with Scarpia to help Cavaradossi, but Scarpia blackmails Tosca into a sexual relationship. Here, "Live to sing, live to love" is sung by Tosca. Tosca demands that Scarpia give her a bill of passage to escape. In the struggle, Tosca stabs Scarpia to death with a knife. In the final act, the opera's climax is the aria "The Stars Shine Bright," sung by the imprisoned Cavaradossi, who is in the middle of writing a love letter to Tosca, when he is overcome with emotion. Tosca then goes to Cavaradossi and tells him that she has obtained a bill of passage and killed Scarpia. The two rejoice in their fleeting freedom, but what was supposed to be a sham execution is really an execution of Cavaradossi, and finally Tosca follows suit and takes her own life, ending the opera tragically.
