Description:
Vai describes his new work as follows: "It's very 'Vai-like'. It's very 'Vai-ish', whatever that means. Whatever that means. I don't know who can explain it better than me. Anyway, it's very honest music. A lot of my work is long, has a lot of concepts, and plays around with storylines. This time there is none of that. This time, there are nine songs that are pretty dense instrumentals that I wanted to record in a way that I could play in front of people," he said. For Vai, at the heart of the conception of "Inviolet" was the desire to perform these songs on stage. In fact, in the early days of Corona Pandemic, the recording of a very different album, consisting mainly of solo acoustic songs with vocals, was nearing its climax. In the midst of all this, Vai had to stop the work altogether because, in addition to tearing three tendons in his right shoulder and requiring surgery, a "spring finger" attack in his left thumb eventually stiffened his entire finger, making it very difficult to play his instrument. And when he was finally through with the recovery process, he looked somewhat excitedly at the 200-plus tour dates that loomed below him. Thus, the acoustic album was shelved, and "Inviolet" was born, created with the stage more in mind. The song "Knapsack," which is also included on this album, was written and recorded when he was wearing a triangular bandage over his right arm after shoulder surgery (called a "knapsack" by his surgeon, Dr. Knapp), which meant he could only use his left hand when playing songs. For "Candlepower," Vai developed an entirely new guitar technique that he called "joint shifting. The concept is to simultaneously bend multiple strings in opposite directions, "using only the first joint of the bending finger independently of the other fingers. While bending multiple strings is not a new concept, according to Vai, "I've never seen it done the way I envisioned it.The album also features a newly recorded drum track by fellow Zappa alumnus Terry Bozio (other tracks on the album feature many of Vai's trusted and talented players, including bassists Billy Sheen, Brian Bellar, Philip Bynoe, and Henrik Linder, keyboardist David Rosenthal, and drummer Vinnie Caliuta and Vai touring member Jeremy Colson).
