A Rarity! The Complete Nocturnes & Scherzandi by Haydn Both the “Notturno” (Nocturne) and “Scherzando” (Scherzo) are suites consisting of three to four movements; like the serenade, they were written for the enjoyment of the aristocracy and intended for performance at court. It is believed that Haydn refined, experimented with, and perfected the symphonic form through the composition of such occasional music. Conductor Dennis McCaldine is also a musicologist and serves as director of the British Haydn Society. He incorporates the findings of Haydn scholarship into his performances, making this a disc of profound significance not only for musical appreciation but also from academic and archival perspectives. Discs 1 and 2 feature performances by different ensembles with similar names. The “Jessop” ensemble consists of young musicians and was founded by the British Haydn Society and the University of Sheffield. The “Trinity” ensemble was founded by the British Haydn Society and Trinity College of Music, and is a slightly larger ensemble than “Jessop.” Tobu Land System
