The popular ballet "Coppelia" by Leo Dreib (1836-1891), inspired by E.T.A. Hoffman's "The Sandman," tells the story of Coppelius, a doll maker, his doll Coppelia (the villagers do not know that she is a doll), Swanilda, a girl who lives in the house opposite Coppelius and and her lover Franz. The main characters are Franz, who has fallen in love with the beautiful Coppelia sitting by the window, and Swanilda, who is jealous of her. The film is set in the present day and was shot on movie film, with some very stylish details and camerawork. Maggie Malan's choreography, which is always unique and sometimes grotesque, transports the audience into a dreamlike world.Maggie Malan was born in Toulouse, France in 1951 to parents who were exiles from Spain. She studied classical ballet from an early age, first at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Paris and then at the Strasbourg Ballet Company, where she became a classical ballet dancer, In 1974, he joined the Ballet du XXe Century, where his talent as a contemporary dancer blossomed, The following year, he was recognized as a choreographer and created some of the most outstanding ballet works of his career.
