Description:

In the mid-20th century, musicians in countries under communist regimes—such as Russia and Poland—faced severe repression from the authorities. However, with the launch of the “Warsaw Autumn” contemporary music festival in Warsaw, Poland, in 1956, restrictions on their creative freedom were suddenly eased, and numerous composers began writing music according to their own visions. Henryk Górecki was one of them, and he gained international recognition through several experimental works. However, by the 1970s, Górecki had turned his back on his avant-garde style and gradually began composing religious and meditative music. In 1976, the “Symphony of Sorrows,” written for soprano solo and orchestra, is a work emblematic of Górecki during this period; the atmosphere created by the orchestra singing at a leisurely tempo and the soprano singing poems of lament from various eras was indeed fitting for heralding a new era. However, there is no doubt that this work became widely known to people around the world thanks to the 1992 recording featuring Dawn Upshaw and the Zinman & London Sinfonietta. At the time, Nonesuch Records—then a pioneer in contemporary music—treated this album as just another “ordinary new release,” but when a British broadcaster used the second movement of this piece as the theme music for a program, it reached the ears of a wide audience, which sparked an explosion in popularity, ultimately propelling it to No. 1 on the UK classical album chart (and No. 6 on the overall album chart!). This film, directed by the renowned Tony Palmer, traces the genesis of the “Symphony of Sorrows” while delving into the essence of the repressed composer, Górecki. Why was this piece created, and how did it establish its popularity? These questions are explored in a matter-of-fact manner. Naxos Japan
