Recently, as his music has been used in film scores and other contexts, there have been more opportunities to hear the music of Pärt (1935–). Much of it has a clear and simple sound, much like *Mirror in the Mirror*, and perhaps because of this, many people seem to view Pärt as a “healing composer.” This documentary, filmed around 1990, provides a detailed account of Pärt’s state of mind at the time. It explains the transformation he underwent—from composing intense works in the early stages of his career that drew on neoclassical styles, twelve-tone technique, and serials, to (having studied Gregorian chant and Renaissance music) to arrive at the “Tintinnabuli” style. Furthermore, his masterpiece, the “St. John Passion,” composed in 1981–82, serves as the culmination of Pärt’s work from this period and is a striking work filled with sacred silence and sound, which masterfully depicts the story of Christ’s Passion through the pared-down sounds produced by a very small number of singers and instrumentalists. Hilliard, who was Pärt’s close friend and a great admirer of his work, released a studio recording of this piece on the ECM label; this version, however, captures a live concert at Durham Cathedral and is permeated throughout with what might be described as a “quiet sense of elation.” The music of Arvo Pärt, who blazed new trails for contemporary music—isn’t it precisely what we need in these uncertain times?
