Description:
Weber’s (1786–1826) “Holy Mass No. 1” is, for some reason, commonly referred to as the “Der Freischütz Mass,” but in reality, it has no connection whatsoever to that famous opera. It was premiered in 1818, on the name day of King Augustus Frederick I of Saxony, with Weber himself conducting. It is believed that, likely in an effort to raise the work’s profile, someone later attached the title of Weber’s masterpiece, *Der Freischütz*, to it and promoted it under that name. The work is truly magnificent, and the solo parts are as dazzling as those in an opera. This performance by Horst Stein is highly acclaimed as a revival of a little-known work. The other piece is Haydn’s (1732–1809) “Mass of St. Cecilia,” presented here in a passionate performance by Kubelik in his mature period. Led by Lucia Pop’s delicate vocals, listeners can enjoy a devout and magnificent world brought to life by outstanding singers. Naxos Japan
