On July 15, the day before his death, the great conductor Karajan was rehearsing *Un ballo in maschera*, which was set to premiere that year at the Salzburg Festival. However, due to his sudden passing, this performance never took place. Georg Solti took over the project. Solti took over the production with the same stellar cast of singers, polished the entire work in just one week, and delivered a magnificent performance. The footage shown here is from a revival the following year; it is a magnificent performance that blends Karajan’s original vision with Solti’s powerful interpretation. Naxos Japan
