Munich in the 13th century. On St. John’s Day—the summer solstice—there was a legend that “if two people jump over a blazing fire together, their love will be fulfilled.” Kunrad, a young man who has fallen in love at first sight with the mayor’s daughter, Demut, uses this legend to confess his love to her. However, humiliated in front of everyone (even though she is actually drawn to him), Demut impulsively gets her revenge on him. Enraged, Kunrad uses magical powers to extinguish every light and fire in the town. The town is thrown into chaos, and Kunrad is sentenced to death, but… In 2014, the 150th anniversary of Richard Strauss’s (1864–1949) birth, his operas were performed extensively across the country. Among them were rare works such as this *Fire Peril*. His second opera, *Fire Peril*, composed in 1901, is a “fairy-tale opera” sung entirely in the Munich dialect. The entire work is rarely performed, and while only the “Love Scene” is widely known, it is a fascinating opera brimming with beautiful melodies. That said, true to Strauss’s naturally ironic nature, this work is also peppered with various satirical elements. The opera is sprinkled with melodies by Wagner, whom Strauss respected at the time; this is said to be “Strauss’s retaliation” against the city of Munich—a city that had hindered the music of both Wagner and Strauss— —suggesting that without the music of Wagner and Strauss, the world would become a much darker place. This is an enjoyable production centered around the renowned opera conductor Gabriele Ferro’s solid musical direction and the celebrated baritone Henschel.
