“Hansel and Gretel” conducted by Welser-Möst during his tenure as music director of the Zurich Opera House. An innocent world, nursery rhymes, dancing, and a peaceful forest… While everything is rooted in traditional German music, the sound is—as one would expect from Humperdinck (1854–1921), who is regarded as Wagner’s successor—rich, profound, and utterly beautiful. Be warned: don’t underestimate this as just an opera for children—it’s quite a challenge. While the plot is based on the Grimm fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel,” the libretto was originally written by the composer’s sister, Adelheid Wette, and features many plot elements that differ from the original story, which adds to its intrigue. For this production, Maurice Sendak—best known for the picture book *Where the Wild Things Are*—designed the sets, meticulously depicting a magical and fantastical world. Nikiteanu and Hartelius, who sing the lead roles, possess the perfect charm for their parts, and Vogel, in the role of the sorcerer (witch), is equally unique. While this role is often sung by women, it is sometimes performed with an expressive male voice; in the past, Theo Adam sang it, creating a world all his own.
