Britten's (1913-1976) War Requiem was commissioned by the church and composed for the dedication of Coventry Cathedral, which was erected in May 1962. This video is a recording of the commemorative concert that took place exactly 50 years after the date of its premiere, May 30, 1962, in the same place and with the same orchestra. The War Requiem, one of Britten's masterpieces, contains a deep prayer for the repetition of war by interspersing the usual liturgical text with an anti-war poem by W. Owen, the poet who was killed in World War I at the age of 25, just before the armistice.Coventry, where this concert was held, was one of the most heavily bombed areas in England, and St. Michael's Church, where the concert was held, was blown up during World War II. Britten's passion for this work must have been very strong. This performance is the fruit of the thoughts of all the musicians, and the depth of the work is further enhanced by the fact that Padmore, a master of religious music, sang the tenor part, which was sung by Pears at the premiere, as well as Nelsons' heartfelt conducting. The world may have reached a milestone when the final chorus, which seems to gently envelop everything, melts away into space. Naxos Japan
