Description:
Belmonte, a Spanish nobleman, comes to the governor’s harem—where his fiancée, Constanza, is being held captive—in search of her after she fell into the hands of pirates and was sold to Governor Selim. With the help of his servant Pedrillo and Blonde—Pedrillo’s lover and Constance’s maid—they all plot an escape from the harem, but their plan is foiled when they are discovered by Osmin, the governor’s guard. Selim learns that Belmonte is the son of his sworn enemy and is about to order his execution, but… From 1781 to 1782, this Singspiel (a play driven by dialogue rather than recitative) was commissioned by Emperor Joseph II of Austria. It is an interesting opera in which the characterization is relatively simple for a Mozart work, and it reflects the fascination with Turkish culture that was popular at the time. The music is beautiful, and the arias scattered throughout are extremely challenging—making it demanding for singers, yet full of highlights. This production dates from 1976 and features a direction by Günter Rennert—chosen by the opera house as it sought a new direction, distinct from the production directed by Gustav Rudolf Senner a few years earlier—which was innovative for its time. Aside from the soloists’ superb singing, Hans-Peter Halbachs’ performance as Governor Selim (narrator only) is outstanding and lends the production a sense of tension. This premiere was recorded live and broadcast by ZDF (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen—Second German Television) in December 1976. Naxos Japan
