The Count of Almaviva is in love with Rosina, the niece of Dr. Bartolo. To win her heart, the Count asks his friend Figaro, a “jack-of-all-trades,” to help him. Rosina is actually drawn to the Count as well, but she cannot escape the watchful eye of her guardian, Bartolo (who, in fact, is after Rosina’s fortune and is plotting to marry her). Figaro is asked by both the Count and Rosina, “Please do whatever it takes to make this happen.” Seizing the opportunity, he launches a battle of wits. With disguises, mix-ups, and slapstick—it’s a classic comedy. Who will have the last laugh in the end? Beaumarchais’s play *The Barber of Seville* had been adapted into opera by many composers even before Rossini (1792–1868), resulting in numerous successful productions. At the time Rossini composed the opera, Paisiello’s work of the same name was very popular; consequently, it is said that Rossini had to (at least nominally) pay respect to his predecessor’s work—such as by changing the title to *Almaviva, or The Useless Precaution* for the premiere—while also highlighting the originality of his own composition. Although it did not gain much popularity immediately after its premiere, it has since become one of the most popular operas of all time, rivaling the very best. With its masterful characterization, music bursting with vitality, technically demanding arias, and scattered witticisms… this is the true portrayal of human nature. This performance is a live recording from the Royal Opera House of Parma, known for attracting a discerning audience. Any singer capable of delivering a flawless performance here is sure to be highly regarded wherever they go in the world. The Russian tenor Korczak as the single-minded Count; Sarsi, a familiar face in Japan, as the intellectual Figaro; the breathtakingly skilled Pratico; and Kemoklize, whose beauty is so striking she could star in a movie… But the star of the show is undoubtedly conductor Battistoni. Born in Verona in 1987, he is a rising star. He began studying the cello at age 7 and later went on to study composition and conducting. He has conquered Italy’s major opera houses and music festivals one after another, drawing attention for his talent; in 2011, at the young age of 24, he was appointed Music Director of the Royal Opera House of Parma.
