Description:
Born in Bari, Italy, Cargno's musical talent blossomed at a young age, and he was favorably received by the great composers Mascagni and Puccini, as well as the conductor Toscanini. However, the war years gradually slowed down Cargno's creative activities and his works were forgotten. After receiving an idea from Puccini for a work about the Maremma, Cagno composed this opera in 1929-31 and requested its premiere at La Scala under the baton of Toscanini, but after a complicated process, it was refused on the grounds that it was anti-fascist. Cagno was disappointed, but in the 1960s, interest in the work grew, and in 1966, after the composer's death, the famous Italian conductor Pietro Argento gave the premiere. It was broadcast nationwide on the radio and received favorable reviews. Brief Synopsis (Script by Giuseppe Adami)Late 19th century. Ancient city of Maremma, Ancedonia, José is a shepherd in love with Mara. José is so in love with Mara that he kills the bridegroom whom Mara's father, Turi, has welcomed for his daughter.José flees into the forest with an anxious Mara. Tuli, on the other hand, is furious and vows to take revenge for the honor of his family, so he pursues them and confronts José in the forest. Commentary and summary of the film in English are included.
