Pletel made his debut at La Scala in Milan in 1966 and conducted the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra for the first time that same year; he maintained a close relationship with the Italian music festival thereafter. This highly anticipated album pays tribute to the legendary conductor Platel, who sadly passed away in January 2017. The 2004 live recording at the Teatro Comunale features a magnificent performance by Platel—then 80 years old—that can truly be called the culmination of his musical career. His performance of *Boléro* is particularly unforgettable; his precise and insightful conducting shines, drawing rich colors from the orchestra and transforming the relentlessly repeated theme into a beautiful melody through supple and well-controlled phrasing. Moreover, it goes beyond abstract beauty to possess a sensual, Dionysian intensity, and the compositional skill with which the performance gradually builds in intensity as it heads toward its almost catastrophic conclusion is truly masterful.
