The True Drama of *Werther* Brought to Life by Pletel’s Restrained Conducting A rare *Werther* recording that brings together three exceptional elements: the restrained conducting of French maestro Pletel (b. 1924), the elegant and flawless singing of Alfredo Kraus (1927–1999) as the tormented Werther, and the Charlotte sung by Terrani (1946–1998), who died young from leukemia—together, they form a rare and invaluable recording of *Werther* featuring this perfect trio. Massenet’s *Werther* is a tale of beautiful yet unfulfilled love, in which the poet Werther falls in love at first sight with the beautiful Charlotte but, unable to realize his feelings, ultimately takes his own life. The highlights are the numerous songs, steeped in Romanticism and brimming with passion, but Platel ensures the singers remain in control at all times so they do not get lost in the surging music. Thanks to this, even in the climactic third act, Klaus and Terrani—while singing with passion—remain grounded and flawlessly fulfill their roles as the narrators of the story created by Goethe and Massenet. In the late 1970s, Terrani made a name for herself particularly as a Rossini singer. However, her velvety voice—which is somewhat reminiscent of the mysterious shadows in Titian’s paintings—is perfectly suited for the role of Charlotte. Here, too, she delivers a masterful performance that touches the listener’s heart, as in the “Letter Aria,” in which she sings of her wavering heart, drawn to Werther despite her marriage to Albert.
