This album weaves together all 14 songs from Schubert’s Swan Song with The Lake, a collection of songs written by Erolin Warren specifically for this project, presenting them as a single, continuous narrative. Rather than juxtaposing the past and the present, the album is characterized by five songs with lyrics written by Warren herself, which harmonize with Schubert’s world and lend new focus and perspective to these well-known songs. Warren herself feels a strong affinity with Schubert as a fellow songwriter and deeply resonates with his approach of setting words to music to get to the heart of a subject. The resulting TheLake echoes The Swan Song through imagery of water, night, dreams, return, loss, and hope, elevating this masterpiece from a static song cycle to a living repertoire that deserves to be retold anew today. Julian van Mellerats is a baritone from New Zealand. After studying music and languages at the University of Otago in New Zealand, he went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in the UK. He gained international attention after winning competitions such as the Wigmore Hall International Art Song Competition. Known for his intelligent interpretations that draw on his vocal technique and linguistic skills, he is a highly accomplished artist with a wide-ranging repertoire spanning art songs to opera, performing primarily in Europe.
