The Melaki Duo won first prize at the 2023 International Flute & Guitar Chamber Music Competition (Spain) and, since their formation in 2014, has performed a wide-ranging repertoire throughout the United Kingdom. This album marks the debut recording by the Melaki Duo—flutist Meera Maharaj and guitarist James Garling—who studied together at the Royal Northern College of Music. The album features a diverse and captivating selection of music from their repertoire—which freely traverses classical, folk, jazz, and traditional music from around the world—including pieces from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Japan, Macedonia, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In addition to works written specifically for the duo, the album features Garling’s imaginative new arrangements, which lend fresh hues to pieces by William Grant Still, Olivier Messiaen, and Dominique Le Jandré. Furthermore, Maharaj’s alto flute adds even greater depth and rich hues to the music, and double bassist Roberto Carrillo García joins them on Eleanor Alberga’s “Animal Banter.” Moving freely between classical music and music from around the world, this album cherishes an intimacy as if gathering to enjoy music in a living room; it is a record that encapsulates the charm of the Melaki Duo—sharing music across genres and borders.
