The winner of the London Handel International Singing Competition makes his debut! Robert Kahn (1865-1951), a German Jewish composer whose work has seen a resurgence of appreciation in recent years. Highly praised by Brahms and Joachim, he established a solid position in the German music world of his time. However, with the rise of the Nazis, his works were banned, forcing him into exile in Britain. 'Signs of Exile: Songs from the Interstice' is an album centered around songs composed primarily for the vocal range (bass-baritone) Kahn himself possessed. By juxtaposing works by Schumann, whom he deeply admired, Korngold, who also faced exile, and his contemporary Hindemith, it captures the beautiful sound of late German Romanticism, the encroaching darkness of the times, and the "premonition" of exile. The singer is Florian Stürz, a young bass-baritone from Germany who won the 2023 London Handel International Singing Competition. Hailed as a rising star with "honeyed richness" and "emotional immersion," this marks his debut album. Over half the tracks—15 songs—are world premiere recordings by Robert Kahn.Buried in the shadows of history, the warmth reminiscent of Brahms and the richly colored melodies of late Romanticism are revived in the modern era after nearly a century.
