Under the guidance of two masters of the British choral world, Benjamin Nicholas and Peter Phillips, the Merton College Choir has quickly become one of the leading mixed-voice choirs at the University of Oxford. This new recording features works by Gabriel Jackson, a British composer born in the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda who, alongside John Rutter and Bob Chilcott, is highly popular in the Japanese choral world. “The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ” is based on a poem by the British poet and playwright T.S. Eliot—himself a Merton College alumnus—which weaves together passages from the Bible, English poetry, and Latin hymns. Please look forward to this new work by Gabriel Jackson, performed by Benjamin Nicholas—who has collaborated with Gabriel Jackson for many years—and the Merton College Choir. Highlights include Emma Tring—a member of the BBC Singers and the contemporary vocal ensemble “EXAUDI,” who has also performed with Lee Fajolini and The Sixteen— as well as Guy Cutting—a member of the Tallis Scholars (who performed in Japan in 2017), the Marian Consort, and the Gabrieli Consort—are among the standout soloists.
