From New Zealand to ScotlandThe String Quartets of Lyell CresswellLyell Cresswell was born in New Zealand in 1944, studied in Canada and the Netherlands, and since 1970 has been a composer based in Scotland. The recipient of the Ian White Award from the Scottish National Orchestra Society and the International Composers' Encouragement Award from UNESCO, Creswell's works are original and connect the cultures of his native New Zealand and Scotland. The Red Note Ensemble is a New Zealand-based ensemble that performs a wide range of music for string quartet and cello. The Red Note Ensemble is a Scottish contemporary music ensemble formed in 2008. Although the ensemble is adaptable to a variety of formations, this album features Robert Irvine, who has held principal positions with the Philharmonia Orchestra, ASMF, and Scottish Opera, Jacqueline Shave, who is the appointed leader of the Britten Sinfonia, Brodsky String Quartet The four virtuoso players are Paul Cassidy of the Quartet and Tom Hankey of the Carino String Quartet.
