Ludus Baroque is a Scottish period orchestra and choir founded in 1998 by Richard Neville-Taur, Music Director of Canongate Church in Edinburgh. Their performances and interpretations of early music repertoire—particularly the works of Handel and J.S. Bach—have earned high acclaim, particularly in Europe and the United States. “The Triumph of Time,” Handel’s first oratorio, is said to have been composed in Rome in 1707 using libretto by Cardinal Benedetto Pamphili. “The Triumph of Time,” in which Handel’s talent—which had blossomed in his early twenties—shines brilliantly, is one of his masterpieces from his Italian period. The roles of “Beauty,” “Pleasure,” “Enlightenment,” and “Time” are performed by young, renowned singers from the British early music scene, including soprano Sophie Bevan and bass William Berger; the soloists’ exceptional vocal prowess is particularly noteworthy.
