In Philip Glass's "Songs," baritone Martin Achreiner and pianist Maki Namekawa make the world premiere recording of Glass's 1997 song cycle "The Songs of Milarepa." The work is about the spiritual journey of the Tibetan poet Milarepa from 900 to 1000 A.D. Martin Achreiner, who has sung in several Glass operas, including his breakthrough role as Kepler, the title role in a 2009 Glass opera, has quickly become a Glass specialist. Namekawa is one of the outstanding artists currently working with Philip Glass; he was selected by Glass in 2014 to be the first pianist to record Glass' Complete Piano Etudes. The album concludes with "Three Songs for Baritone and Piano," a collection of songs from two sources: the 1989 opera "Hydrogen Jukebox," which Glass produced with Allen Ginsberg, and the multimedia opera "Monsters of Grace" with director Robert Wilson.
