Description:
Rita Ueda was born in Hakodate in 1963. She currently lives in Vancouver. She is a composer and sound designer. She studied at Simon Fraser University and California Institute of the Arts. Studied composition under Rudolf Comorows, Rodney Sherman, Wadada Leo Smith, Morton Sabotnick, and Stefan L. Mosko. He won second prize in the Gustav Mahler International Composition Competition. His prize-winning works were performed by the Vienna Radio Orchestra and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. Many of his orchestral works have been published by Doblinger in Vienna. Collaborations between avant-garde music and traditional Asian instruments have been performed in the past, such as in Toru Takemitsu's "November Steps". Unlike Takemitsu Toru's works, which were more pure music, this piece is a motto music with the theme of world peace. The sound is so complex that one might be tempted to get defensive, but I would like to surrender myself to the shower of sound and enjoy the sonic world that the composer has depicted. The members of the ensemble, who regularly perform this kind of music in their repertoire, draw you in with their unwavering sound. The ethnic melodies remind us of the soloists' hometowns, which is also an interesting point of listening. The tar is a stringed instrument of the lute genus with a long neck found in Iran, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, and other Caucasus regions. The guzheng is a Chinese koto. Naomi Sato, who plays the sho, initially studied saxophone at Tokyo University of the Arts, but after taking a class in gagaku (ancient Japanese court music) at the Japanese Music Department, she studied the sho under Takashi Ishikawa. Currently based in Amsterdam, she is active in both sho and saxophone. Tobu Shoji Co.
