A very significant CD has been released. It is a collection of songs by Italian composer Guido Alberto Fano (1875-1961). Fano is probably not well known in Japan, but he was a great disciple of Giuseppe Martucci, and produced various works from the 1890s to the 1930s. He was also an important figure among Italian composers in the first half of the 20th century, serving as director of the Conservatory of San Pietro a Maiella in Naples and the Conservatory of Vincenzo Bellini in Palermo. During World War II, however, he was suppressed by the Mussolini regime and had to go into hiding. He lived a long life until 1961, but is little known today. However, anyone who listens to this collection of songs will be fascinated by Fano's wonderful musicality. It is hard to believe that Fano was an Italian composer when you hear his music for the first time, and not only his songs. His delicate, soft, and colorful music, strongly influenced by French music, is like a modern development of French music just before Impressionism. If you like modern Italian songs, you will fall in love with Fano's songs. Silvia Frigato is an Italian soprano active in Baroque music.She has a clear, extended, beautiful voice and sings Fano's songs wonderfully. Tobu Shoji Co.
