The "Jatekók (Play)" series of piano pieces, written over a long period of time by György Kurtág, one of Hungary's leading contemporary composers along with Ligeti, is the metaphorical equivalent of Bartók's "Microcosmos," Grieg's "Lyric Pieces," or Janácek's "Lane in the Shade of the Grass. It is a series of diary-like pieces written between major compositions as a diversion, an experiment in new ideas, or a personal gift to a friend. Some of the pieces are homages to great composers of the past, which Kurtag likes, and by interspersing them with works by these past composers (e.g., a Schubert piece after a Schubert hymn), one can get more into the essence of Kurtag's music.
