Durante’s Masterpiece from His Later Years: *Miserere*! A collection of sacred music by Francesco Durante (1684–1755), a composer of the Neapolitan School who was active during the same era as Porpora and Feo. Unlike Porpora and Feo, who established their reputations through opera, Durante made a name for himself as a composer of instrumental music, chamber music, and church music. The a cappella “Miserere” with basso continuo and the motet-style choral work “Short Vespers” are major works by Durante that contributed significantly to the development of 18th-century Neapolitan School church music.
