Vardan Mamikonian / Liszt: Piano Works A dazzling collection of Liszt works by Armenian pianist Mamikonian. Born into a musical family, he began studying piano at the age of six at the Yerevan Conservatory in the capital. He later honed his skills at the Moscow Conservatory and the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, studying under Valery Kastelinsky (the last student of the legendary teacher Heinrich Neuhaus) and Lazar Berman. His piano playing is characterized by a powerful and brilliant tone, and is, of course, filled with rich musicality supported by his astonishing technique. This Liszt program is arguably the perfect repertoire for him. I appreciate the thoughtfulness of this program: it begins by making a strong impression with “Liebesträume,” followed by the piano sonata, which showcases his versatile musicality; then brings the listener back to reality with the somber works of Liszt’s later years; and finally, concludes with the expansive “Funeral March,” where he displays the full extent of his technical prowess.
