Dynamic’s Annual Live Broadcast from the Itria Valley Music Festival! Dynamic’s annual live broadcast from the Itria Valley Music Festival in Martina Franca, southern Italy, returns this year. First up is “Bucefalo” by Antonio Cagnoni (1828–1896). Cagnoni was born in Godiasco (a mountain town roughly halfway between Milan and Genoa). After studying at the Milan Conservatory, he was active as an opera composer from the 1850s through the 1870s. “Don Bucefalo” was his breakthrough work, premiered with great success at the Milan Conservatory in 1847 (when Cagnoni was not yet twenty). The story is a “backstage farce.” When the composer Don Buccefalo attempts to stage a new opera at the village theater, a widow named Rosa volunteers to play the prima donna. She dreams of marrying Count Belprato, but is also loved by Don Marco. However, chaos ensues when her husband, Carlino—whom she had believed to be dead—returns to the village and, suspecting his wife of infidelity, begins to spy on her. Calisto Bassi’s libretto is an adaptation of Fioravanti’s “The Village Singer” (released on CD as BONGIOVANNIGB2135), a hugely popular work from the early 19th century, and its slapstick humor is a delight. As is customary at the Itria Valley Music Festival, the cast features young, talented singers. Mizuki Date, who plays Agata, is from Tokyo. She graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2003 and moved to Italy in 2006 to further her studies. [Comment provided by King International] ---
