“Alfonso and Estrella,” brimming with Schubert’s characteristic melodic beauty And Eva May plays the heroine! “Alfonso and Estrella” is a major opera by Schubert, composed between 1821 and 1822. However, it was never staged during his lifetime and was not premiered until 1854—more than 30 years later. Alfonso, the son of the exiled former king, and Estrella, the daughter of the current king, meet in the forest and fall in love. A rebellion against the current king then breaks out, which Alfonso quells. The two kings reconcile, Alfonso becomes the new king, and he marries Estrella—that is the story. Since it is such a monumental work among Schubert’s operas, it is rarely staged; even here in Vienna, it was only presented by Aronköhr in 1997. Now, the Cagliari Opera House on the island of Sardinia—which has earned high praise for reviving lesser-known operas by great composers—has staged it, and Dynamic has even released it on DVD. What’s more, to my surprise, the heroine, Estrella, is Eva May, the prima donna of the Italian opera scene who is currently at the height of her career. She sings the role in German. She is scheduled to sing the role of Violetta in the Fujiwara Opera Company’s production of *La Traviata* this January. Rainer Trost, a gifted lyric tenor who is in high demand for operas by Mozart and others, plays Alfonso. This promises to be quite a treat. Ronconi’s highly talked-about staging is also a must-see.
