To commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth, Britten’s (1913–1976) masterpiece *Death in Venice* is now available on Blu-ray. Based on the novel by Thomas Mann, “Death in Venice” is often overshadowed by the film’s powerful imagery, but Britten’s opera offers a different perspective on the work. Deep insight and ephemeral beauty, innocence and guilt. By contrasting these elements, the opera attempts to portray the poignant state of mind of the aging novelist, while Tazio—the symbol of youthful beauty—is expressed solely through dance, rather than song. This performance was recorded at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the setting of the story. The picturesque city to which Aschenbach “came with dreams” has been deliberately transformed into a decadent and dark city, populated exclusively by eerie and indolent people. Britten did not employ a large cast; aside from the lead roles of Aschenbach and Tadzio, he had a single baritone shoulder nearly all the other roles. Here, the role of Aschenbach is sung by the American tenor Merlin Miller. True to his reputation as a specialist in Britten, his performance shines exactly as one would imagine. The baritone is Scott Hendricks, also from the United States. He delivers a remarkably versatile performance that could truly be described as “seven transformations.” Riga’s sexy physique in the role of Tadzio is also irresistible. The conductor is Bartoletti, who was 82 at the time of the recording. A hint of decay lingers within the crisply composed music. Naxos Japan
