However, the tense narrative and music—which are rather uncharacteristic of Rossini—have since been reevaluated, and today it is highly regarded as one of Rossini’s ambitious masterpieces. This production in Pesaro features mezzo-soprano Ganassi and tenor Siragusa—both Rossini singers who are very popular in Japan—as well as Kunde, who earned acclaim in Japan for singing the title role in Rossini’s *Otello*, Pizzolato, who is emerging as the leading young Rossini mezzo-soprano, and other strong performers. Furthermore, Roberto—Claudio’s nephew (his older brother’s son)—brings a superb sense of tension to this world of madness. The production is directed by Claudio’s son, Roberto.
