Britten's masterpiece "Death in Venice," performed at Teatro La Fenice, Venice, is now available on DVD! Among Britten's operas, "Death in Venice" by Thomas Mann is one of the most famous, and although there are many recordings of the opera, surprisingly, there has never been a live performance of the opera in a theater. This DVD is a live performance at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, where the story takes place. The production was directed by Italian master Pier Luigi Pizzi. Pizzi is known for his use of vivid colors, but here he succeeded in creating a very impressive stage by daring to make the supposedly scenic Venice a dimly lit city and bringing Aschenbach's emotions to the fore. The important Aschenbach is American tenor Marlin Miller.A dexterous tenor with a very wide repertoire, he sang Peter Quint in Britten's acclaimed production of "The Turn of the Screw" directed by Luc Bondy at the 2001 Aix-en-Provence Festival. The baritone Scott Hendricks, a native of San Antonio, Texas, USA, takes on the role of the traveler and many others who appear in various scenes in a rhapsodic manner. He is well known for his acting ability, and his presence is outstanding. The conductor is Bruno Bartoletti, the longest-serving conductor in the world of Italian opera. Recorded in HD.
