A live performance in Bergamo, Donizetti’s hometown! “L’elisir d’amore,” featuring a cast of many talented young singers!! In Bergamo, Donizetti’s hometown, the season-opening performance is designated as the Gaetano Donizetti Music Festival, and a Donizetti opera is staged there every year. The 2007–08 season opened with *L’elisir d’amore*. Raul Hernandez, who sang the role of Nemorino, is a tenor from Mexico. He is a lyrical tenor whose repertoire ranges from Donizetti to Verdi’s early operas. In May 2002, during the Biwako performance of *I Puritani* as part of the Bologna Opera’s tour of Japan, he sang the role of Arturo opposite Gurbélova. Sylvia Dalla Benetta is a soprano who has been making a name for herself in recent years. Adina is her signature role. Alex Esposito is a native of Bergamo, the very city where the opera is set. He is a young Italian baritone who is currently very popular and has also performed at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro. It is still fresh in our memories that he sang the role of Figaro in the Japanese tour of *The Marriage of Figaro*, produced by the Salzburg Festival, in April 2008. The conductor is Alessandro De Marchi, a maverick in the Italian early music scene, who has crafted a crisp and lively interpretation of Donizetti. Director Alessio Pizeck is the same director who staged Rossini’s *Cenerentola* for the Spoleto Opera’s Japan tour in June 2008. Here, too, he has crafted a wonderful, vibrantly colored production.
