Description:
The 1991 film "The Morning We Met" depicts the virtuoso viol player Sante-Colombes and his pupil Marin Marais. Unlike Sante-Colombes, who is devoted to playing alone, Marin-Marais is in a dispute with Sante-Colombes, who is seeking prosperity. In the end, Marais was excommunicated because of the difference in direction, but tried to steal his master's technique through Sante-Colombe's daughter...that was the synopsis. Although little is known about his actual career, he was one of the greatest gamba players of the 17th century, and his 67 surviving ensemble pieces and more than 170 transcriptions of solo pieces reveal his great talent. This album is intended to highlight the similarities and differences between the works of Sainte-Colombes and Marais by playing them side by side. It also includes a world premiere recording from a manuscript discovered in Toulogne, Burgundy. Naxos Japan
