[Donizetti's Unknown Opera] There were two wealthy merchant brothers living in Lisbon. The older brother Olivo is hot-blooded and mean-spirited, while the younger brother Pasquale is set as a shy and kind-hearted character. Olivo's daughter Isabella has a lover, Camillo, but Olivo plans to arrange a marriage with Mr. Bross, a merchant in Cadiz. In fact, Mr. Bross understands that Isabella has a lover, and promises to work with Pasquale to help the young couple... Donizetti's opera buffa "Olivo e Pasquale" was first performed at the Teatro Valle in Rome in January 1827, and a slightly revised version was performed in Naples in September. The role of Camillo was originally sung by a contralto, but in this Neapolitan version, the role has been changed to a tenor. 2016's production uses a critical edition of the Neapolitan version in which Pasquale sings in the Neapolitan dialect, which is a very detailed characterization of not only the brothers, but also of the other characters. The production was very detailed in its portrayal of the characters, especially Morace's singing in a Neapolitan accent as Pasquale, the younger brother, which was a big hit with the audience.Bruno Tadia's magnificent singing as Olivo is also excellent and makes this unusual opera even more enjoyable.
