During the weekly evening music of the Advent season (about a month before Christmas), Buxtehude, who was also a famous organist, played the organ, and relatively short cantatas such as the one included here were also performed. It was one of the busiest times in the church, and musicians serving the church had to compose for various events, but these works are all masterpieces of cantatas, each of which shines like a jewel.
