Jacobs has staged Monteverdi’s masterpiece *Orfeo* numerous times: in 1993 under the direction of Vernicke, in 1998 in this production directed by Trisha Brown, and again in 2003 under the direction of Barry Kosky. and with a new production reportedly in the works, it’s as if he’s creating a new “Orfeo” every few years. The version now available on DVD is the Brown-directed production staged at the Théâtre des Monets. Brown is a master choreographer of modern ballet based in New York. In this production as well, the dancers achieve remarkable results. The vocal cast is exceptionally strong, led by Simon Keenlyside’s magnificent performance as Orfeo.
