Lichtenthal’s arrangement expanded for string orchestra! Mozart’s Requiem, where the unspoken voices resonate! Born in 1780 in what is now Bratislava, Peter Lichtenthal (1780–1853) was a physician by profession but possessed a rich musical talent; he was also known as a keen interpreter and arranger of Mozart’s music. After obtaining the score for the Jusmayer edition of the “Requiem” from Mozart’s eldest son, Karl Thomas Mozart, Lichtenthal arranged this masterpiece of sacred music into a “string quartet version.” By setting aside the “lyrics” and the “voices” of the vocal parts—the great musical legacy Mozart left at the end of his life—and transforming it into a chamber piece for string instruments, Lichtenthal’s “Requiem” offers a precious opportunity to hear a sublime “voice without a voice.” The Realki Ensemble, which expanded Lichtenthal’s “string quartet arrangement” into a “string ensemble version” and recorded it, is an Italian string ensemble formed in 2003 with a basic lineup of six violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos, and 1 double bass.
