Rare and valuable Donizetti recordings return in a limited-edition boxed set Opera Rara was founded to rediscover, restore, document and perform the lost operatic heritage of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2020. Donizetti has been a particular focus, with the company reviving a great many operas that had gone unperformed. The three opera recordings in this set had been out of print for more than a decade; to round off the anniversary year they are now remastered and reissued together in a limited edition. All three date from the 1830s, when Donizetti was at the height of his popularity in Italy, and they reveal both his acute sense of theatre and his international ambitions. Il diluvio universale takes the biblical story of Noah's ark and adds to it the tragic tale of Cadmo, satrap of the Babylonian city of Sennaar, and his wife Sela, giving the drama a more human and theatrical interest. In order to obtain the approval of the Neapolitan censors, who forbade opera during Lent, Donizetti designated the work an oratorio - an azione tragico-sacra - and performance was duly permitted. Rather than lovers or an unfortunate heroine, the work places its emphasis on Noah and his family. Ugo, conte di Parigi tells the story of Bianca of Aquitaine, betrothed to the young French king Louis V. Bianca is in love with the regent, Ugo, Count of Paris, but Ugo is engaged to her sister Adelia. Suspecting a liaison between the two, the young king has Ugo imprisoned, and the opera ends with the tragic scene in which the rejected Bianca drinks the poison she had prepared for Ugo. Written for the same cast as Bellini's Norma and built on elaborate ensembles, it is a substantial score, premiered at La Scala immediately before L'elisir d'amore. L'assedio di Calais is set in 1347. In Calais, besieged by the English army under Edward III, six burghers including the mayor offer their own lives in exchange for a lasting peace. Moved by their courage, the English queen persuades her husband to lift the siege. One of Donizetti's most innovative works of the 1830s, it is a key score in the development of his relationship with the Paris Opéra. Warner Music Japan
