Description:
In 1838, it was decided that Donizetti’s operas—which had already gained fame in Italy—would be staged for the first time in Paris, France. Donizetti prepared several works, and this *The Angel of Nishida* was among them. Parts of the libretto were nearly identical to those of Pacini’s opera *Adelaide and Comignio*, and the final scene was based on Darnou’s play *Les Amants malheureux* (*The Unhappy Lovers*). Although the work was provisionally completed on December 27, 1839, the story—centered on the King of Naples and his mistress—ran afoul of the censors, and the Théâtre Renaissance in Paris, where it was scheduled to be performed, went bankrupt. As a result, the work was only ever rehearsed and never actually staged. Donizetti reused much of the material from *The Angel of Nishida* in *La Favorita*, which is frequently performed today. However, *The Angel of Nishida* had been buried in history for 179 years. For this production, Candida Mantica, a researcher and musicologist at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, discovered that the score was housed in the National Library of France and other institutions, and after a decade of research, she deciphered the scattered musical notation. By reconstructing the 800-page full score, the premiere was realized in July 2018. The lead roles are sung by Joyce El-Cory and Jong-Hoon Kim, who is from South Korea. The passionate performances of the singers surrounding them—particularly the veteran Roland Nouri, who is exquisite—and Elder’s refined conducting fully convey the work’s charm.
